Student Information (CEIAG)

As a student at Birchwood Community High School, you will be involved with a range of Careers Education, Information, and Guidance (CEIAG) throughout each academic year.  You will have regular CEIAG lessons during Personal Development (PD) and also have full access to all our CEIAG Resources:

  • Assemblies from aspirational speakers, Planning4Change and other external providers
  • Careers Planning4Change drop-ins (lunchtimes)

Year 7

‘All about Me’ – Self-awareness – what am I good at, key qualities and what do I need to work on. (Gatsby 3)

Promote extra-curricular activities as a way of building up skills and experiences. Explore the clubs available in school and outside school.

What are my targets for the end of year 7? E.g., To join a club, get to school on time, actively participate more in lessons. (Gatsby 3)

Why is it important to get to know ourselves? Consider the impact on being able to make well informed choices about Options, College and what careers are going to suit us? (Gatsby 3)

Register on START and work through ‘Opening Your Eyes’ module to create profile. Begin to create an ‘Action Plan’. (Gatsby 3)

‘Meet the Professionals event’ – Students are presented with the opportunity to meet company representatives in school and to ask questions about their jobs to find out what skills are required, what they do every day, how they got into that job and raise awareness of the world of work. (Gatsby 2 and 5 students are required to have AT LEAST one meaningful encounter with an employer every year).

Exploring activities and modules on START – including an introduction to using Locker.

Developing a knowledge of the local labour market and sectors which have a skills shortage. (Gatsby 2 and 5)

Stereotyping and careers

Promote skills building activities – Air Cadets, Sport, Drama, School council, Eco club and update Locker in START

Investigating different work environments, working hours (f/t, p/t, shifts) and self-employment.

Managing money including savings, opening a bank account and budgeting.

Year 9

Continue with START – completing modules on Making Choices including Choosing Options and next pathways.

KS4 Options – GCSE/BTEC, linking subjects to career ideas and exploring skills developed through subjects.

Local Further Education providers invited to Parents’ Evening (Gatsby 7)

Talk to young employees about how they chose their options and top tips (Gatsby 5)

How to make decisions – how to identify the options and systematically evaluate them.
