Pupil Information – Pupil Premium

At Birchwood Community High School, we believe that every child should be given the opportunity to engage with a wide variety of enriching experiences and be exposed to a rich array of powerful knowledge. We know it is just as important to invest in students’ characters, along with their academic potential. With this in mind, all of our students, including our Pupil Premium students, are provided with a diverse range of information and ideas in their lesson through the knowledge-rich curriculum. Beyond their lessons, all students are taught our pastoral curriculum through form time, Personal Development lessons and through specially designed PSHE/Careers days- these encourage the students to consider topics that are crucial for their life beyond school and to engage with broader societal issues. Within this curriculum, there is also the opportunity for reading culturally significant text through our “Literacy Engine” programme. We also have a variety of trips and experiences on offer to all students, throughout their time at Birchwood- these aim to build students’ cultural capital and to encourage them to question the world around them.

What is pupil premium?

The pupil premium grant is funding to improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in state-funded schools in England.

How is pupil premium funded?

Secondary schools receive £1035 funding for each child registered as eligible for free school meals at any point in the last 6 years.

Secondary schools also receive £2.530 for each child identified as previously looked after by a local authority or other state care or children currently looked after by the local authority.

Service pupil premium is additional funding for schools with pupils who have parents serving in the armed forces. It has been combined into pupil premium payments to make it easier for schools to manage their spending.

Pupils in state-funded schools in England attract the service pupil premium grant, at the rate of £335 per eligible pupil.

How is the school accountable for this funding?

Schools must show how they are using their pupil premium effectively:

  • by publishing a statement on their website which presents an overview of their pupil premium strategy, and demonstrates that their use of the funding meets the requirements of the conditions of the grant
  • through OFSTED inspections – inspectors may discuss plans schools have to spend their pupil premium
  • through scrutiny of pupil premium plans by governors and trustees
