Summer Exams ’23

At Birchwood, we understand that meaningful assessment points instil good revision habits; help students to understand how they are progressing and how to develop further and  help staff to support students in the best way possible via the curriculum and targeted intervention.

Years 7, 8 and 9

As you may already be aware, year 7, 8 and 9 students will be assessed over a two-week period, starting on Monday 12th June. These assessments (KaSTs- knowledge and skills tests)  will test students’ understanding of key knowledge and skills that they have accumulated throughout the school year, within each subject.

This is nothing to worry about- rather, this is a chance for students to show what they have learnt over the course of the year and for us to identify any areas of support that we can put in place.

Most of these tests will take place in classrooms. The only exception to this, will be:

  • English (year 7)
  • English and Maths (year 8)
  • English and Maths and Science (year 9)

These assessments listed above take place in the hall. We have arranged this to ensure that students are familiar with this environment and to help them to prepare for examination conditions. The aim of this is to also build their confidence, over the course of Key Stage 3.

Year 10

Year 10 students will also be assessed during a two- week period, starting on Monday 12th June. These assessments will be GCSE- style papers, to prepare students for their examinations in year 11.

Some of these examinations will take place in class whilst maths, English, science and some of the longer exams will take place in the hall to give students as much of an authentic exam experience as possible.

These examinations will help us to support students in the best possible way for the rest of the year and ensure that they have a purposeful start to year 11.
